Refinery & Petrochemical

Case Study

The Challenge:

A leading petroleum refinery faced acute water scarcity as the local municipal bodies were unable to supply their requirement of water. Shortage of water led to temporary closure of the refinery resulting in huge financial losses. This was the situation at the critical stage when the refinery was in the process of expanding its operations and thus needed to ensure self reliance for water. Also, waste water generated from the facility needed to be treated to meet the stringent effluent discharge norms set by the pollution control board.

The Solution:

After carefully studying the effluent from the entire facility, we recommended the innovative INDION Ultra Filtration system followed by a cost effective INDION Reverse Osmosis System operating at high recoveries.

INDION Reverse Osmosis System

Inlet Condition Our Products
TDS = 1860 ppm TDS = 40 ppm
BOD = 20 ppm BOD = BDL (below deductible limit)
COD = 250 ppm COD – BDL (below deductible limit)
Inlet Flow = 969 GPM Outlet Flow = 824 GPM

Benefits:

  • Assured availability of 824 GPM water of consistent quality for process
  • Reduced requirement of fresh water resulted in a saving of US $ 2 million/year
  • Compliance with pollution control board norms
